Book post 3

The movie the Gridiron Gang and the book The Freedom Writers Diary are similar because they are both about young adults who are living underprivledged lives. In the movie the Gridiron Gang the teenagers and young adults are inmates that are placed in a detentional camp for breaking the law. They are put under the care of Sean Porter, a probation officer who isn't willing to just write these violent offenders off. Sean Porter comes up with the idea to form a high school level football team. He comes up with this crazy idea inorder to try to get through to his adolsent inmates that maybe one day they could put their diffences aside, forget the past and actually have a shot at turning their lives around. He puts his job on the line to try and show these young adults that they too have the ability to change the outcome of theur lives. This movie is very similar to my book that I am reading, The Freedom Writers, because a young teacher comes into this school where the children aren't as well off as most. She goes out of her way to try to show her students that school can be a safe place for them. The idea she came up with was diaries that were private and no one else could read them except for her unless the student did not want her to read it either. This diary gave them a chance to express themselves and reach out for help in a quiet private way if needed. The reason why this book is so much alike to the movie The Gridiron Gang is because with both ideas that the teacher and probation officer come up with the students and children regect them and think they are stupid. Both of them bput their jobs on the line inorder to get through to their kids and show them they can change their lives but inorder to do that they need to let change happen.

Inside the Teenage Brain

In the documentary there was a tennager named charlie. While I watched this I wondered why he threw a fit when his mom and dad tried getting him up for school. I think it was interesting that the scientist said that "Once a child becomes a teenager, for a brief period of time it's as thought they become invaded by another body. The scientist said that this was the most tumultuous time of brain developement since comic out of the womb. Another scientist did a sleep test on a teenage girl to watch her sleep activity. She stated that teenagers amount of sleep has been shoved into an ever narrowing window. While charlie's parents were waiting for him to get up his mom made him a full breakfast. I noticed that as Charlie was eating the meal (bacon, eggs, and toast) he complains and says that the bacon was a little to burnt. I don't understand why he feels he needs to be so rude to his mom even though she made him a nice big meal. As I was watching the documentary I noticed that the mom says that he is almost like a totally different kid outside of the house. She also talked about how he was well liked outside the class because his friends don't get the same attitude that his parents do. When everyone is sitting down and getting interviewed he said that his parents have forgotten how to be a kid and that he wants them to let him make his own mistakes. The scientist talks about how the parents just need to realize that this is just another stage of childhood developement and it was the same tempertantrum but in a 5 ft. body instead of a 18 in. body.

Wild child

In the Wild Child documentary about genie and victor, they showed how malnourished they both were and how undeveloped their brains were. I thought this was intereting because you really don't know if she was mentally unstable from birth. In their studies they showed that during her sleep cycle she showed symptoms that she could have been mentally challenged before being malnourished. I wonder if she was provided with the right nourishment when they found her would she gradually overcome the most nightmareish cases of it all? While watching this documentary I also wondered why the parents did that to her in the first place? In the video a reporter talked about how both the parents were older and how the father was very controlling. The mother said that she was going blind and she too was controlled by the father. He thought geni was mentally retarded from birth and just did not want to deal with her. At first when they found her she was not able to express herself or speak clearly. She was not able to walk that well and throughout her life she has not acquired human traits, that by thirteen any adolent would have, because she was so malnourished. In france a boy named victor, was found and delt with the same life challenges genie faced. Ironically enough a movie was produced and the movie premired 1 week after genie's discovery. They scientists and doctors that bleork with both victor and genie said that once puberty had taken place they would not be able to learn how to speak if they had not ever learned before. While genie was at the hospital one of her doctors had become sort of her derived parent. He was there in the morning while she ate breakfast and there at night to tuck her into bed and give her a goodnight kiss. Everyone loved herald she would get so excited by the silliest things, balloons were one of the things that made her laugh, like a real heart felt laugh.

Research Article 2

I think this was a good article because it was sort of interesting to see that something that was made to be somewhat indestructible, could be broken. I do not understand why they put this information out to the public because it could be used in a murder case or just a regualr trial where they are using this method to figure out whether the defendent was guilty or not. What does moving those certain fingers and one toe do to make the test unrelyable? Why did the people who can up with this way of cheating around the test use those three body parts? What do they connect to, that reduces the activity in the front-most part of the brain to show whether they are lying or telling the truth. What is it that calms you down by doing those three movements with those three body parts?

Research article 1

I think that the study shows that even though people agknologe the warnings, they do ignore them. They ignore them because they feel it is uneccesarry and untrue. One question that I do have is why do they still have the warnings lables if no one pays any attention to them? I have seen movies and read lables that I have disreguarded because I did not want to think about how the world could come to an end. I much rather read an artical about global warming that had positive potential technological solutions. I would listen and pay more attention to potential solutions about global warming than warnings about negative outcomes in the near future. When I read about how the polar bears are losing their homes it just drives me even further away from the subject then before. Even while watching a movie that I know is not real and can not actually happen, it still scares me that all of that negativity will occur on earth in the future to come.

second book post

"Unfortunately, I have realized that we cannot completely erase all the evil from the world, but we can change the way we deal with it, we can rise above it and stay strong and true to ourselves. And most important, we can inspire others- this is what makes us human beigns, this is what can make us immortal" (Zlata Filipovic xvii).

This quote is taken from the into of the book freedom writers. In the intro the author explains her connection to the students and how she had visited them in 1996. She explains how the students were given the idea to start writing diaries by reading the book Anne Frank: a diary about a young girl and also got the idea from the authors own book Zlata's Diary; a child's life in Sarajevo. The quote explains the authors veiws towrds adversity and evil. She realizes that she cannot always change things but simply try to rise above it and survive by staying strong and true to your self. I think this is a very good mind set because alot of people face tough things in life and it is a great way to try and beat it

glog

glog link

In my glog I have pictures that depict different parts of psychology. I choose to use the picture of wheels around the shape of a head because psychology is the wheels of the brain and how the brain works. I have a picture of a head with a key hole inside of it because psychology is exploring and unlocking the brain and how it works. I have another picture that is of two heads one overlapping the other. One of the heads is white and the other is black and they both have what looks to be the galaxcy inside where the brain would be. I think this picture represents psychology because the galaxcy is like your mind and humans explore the galaxcy just as they explore the human brain. On the right of my poster I have put a picture that looks like it was painted on and it is a tree but inside the tree there is a face resting with leaves falling all around it. I think this represents psychology because the leaves that are falling off the tree are like ideas and thoughts that are running through your mind. I have a picture that has a neon outline of a head with psychology writen in neon letters on top of the outline. Inside the outline of the head there are words that have something to do with psychology and what it is. At the bottom I have a picture of a little boy. The face of the little boy is blurred out and there is one circle outlining the eye of the child and on the outside of the circle there is a drawing or what looks to be a blue print of a gear or a wheel. Over top of the boys face there are building blocks, which I think represent the building blocks or fundimentials of psychology. To the left of the building blocks there is a drawing of a sunflower which I think represents the creativity and ideas that run throughout the childs mind. The last picture I have is a face but the top of the brain is removed and it is sectioned off into 7 different sections that look like different thoughts or catagories in your mind.
